Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform opens up a host of possibilities for both high volume products with mass appeal, and for lower volume niche vehicles, much like the Golf Alltrack that you see here. It’s no secret that we are huge fans of the Golf SportWagen, especially the R-Line 4Motion TDI example shown in New York earlier this year, so when we first heard about the upcoming Golf Alltrack, we were excited to say the least.

Featuring rugged body cladding and a ride height that is 20mm taller than the Golf SportWagen, the Golf Alltrack is perfect for those looking for something a bit more versatile than the standard wagon. Full time 4MOTION all-wheel-drive ensures that the Golf Alltrack will be as capable as it looks, and an available 180hp TDI powerplant paired to a 6-speed DSG gearbox should keep things moving quite well. Further assisting the 4MOTION system is what Volkswagen is calling their “EDS” and “XDS” systems- EDS being an electronic differential lock on both front and rear axles, and XDS utilizing the brakes as an aid to the car’s ESC system. The Golf Alltrack will also come with an “Offroad” driving profile, activating an ABS calibration that has been optimized for off-road driving, a hill decent assist feature, and modified accelerator pedal sensitivity.

The Golf Alltrack will be going on sale next spring, but there is no word if that will include the North American market. It would make sense to bring it here, as Volkswagen does have an MQB production facility on the continent, but we’ve yet to receive any confirmation. Until then, we can only hope.
